Where Do Your Loyalties Lie?

So, it’s come out in the news over the last week about Michael Cohen. He was a longtime personal and business attorney for Donald Trump. He has pleaded guilty to eight criminal charges.

Two of these charges relate to the payment of “hush money” to two women, from campaign money, who alleged to have affairs with Donald Trump. It was also alleged Donald Trump told Michael Cohen to make these payments.

So, this may be “fake news” as Donald Trump so often points out. However, It may be true. This is not what I want to debate.

Michael Cohen thought he was doing the right thing by being loyal to his “friend”. Nevertheless, what he did was wrong and it wasn’t until Michael Cohen’s father, who survived the holocaust, pointed out he was wrong.

Michael’s loyalties were misplaced.

How often do we feel our morals are compromised because we want to be loyal to our friends, our family, or the place where we work?

My child, never forget the things I have taught you. Store my commands in your heart. If you do this, you will live many years, and your life will be satisfying. Never let loyalty and kindness leave you! Tie them around your neck as a reminder. Write them deep within your heart.  Proverbs 3:1-3

The aim is not to have an external appearance of adhering to God’s commands, but an internal one. Our hearts are to love and obey Him in all situations of our life.

We are to be loyal to God’s will. Not others…And not our own!  When we are truly loyal to God from our very hearts, then we will experience a long life filled with peace.

This was written for the Five Minute Friday Community, where a number of writers gather for a weekly writing challenge around a single word prompt and write to our hearts content, but only for five minutes (or there abouts).

This weeks word prompt is ‘loyal’. Click here if you want to see what other people wrote. You can also have a go yourself. What do you think of when you hear the word ‘loyal’?

  1. I was talking with my son about this prompt and he wisely pointed out that loyalty should never be close minded or inflexible. So true from your example. Your FMF neighbour #48

    1. I agree. People are often motivated by what is on offer to them as to whether they are loyal to the other person. As long as we are loyal to what is True then we should be ok.

  2. We tend to think of loyalty as a good thing (which it often is) but it’s true that so much depends on where that loyalty is placed. We need to be loyal to God above all, even friends and family.
