I am Seen

She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.”
Genesis 16:13

Have you ever felt rejected or mistreated? Hurt or forgotten? Have you ever been in a situation so painful you just want to run away? All you want is for someone to come alongside you and to be seen. Instead you just feel lonely and abandoned.

When I was 15, I remember sitting on the steps of an old disused building thinking what was the point? I was being bullied so much and I was trying to process what I had been through when I was younger. I was getting threats from other children wanting to beat me up after school. None of the teachers ever noticed what I was going through.

I remember sitting on those cold steps with a piece of glass in my hand and I just wanted to end it. I had a connection with this building. It was abandoned and derelict and no use for anyone. I felt like a little child so lost and worthless.

As I sat there contemplating what to do, I remember feeling I wasn’t on my own. I felt God was there with me pulling me from those steps and telling me to go home.

I felt seen.

In Genesis chapter 16, Sarai was mistreating Hagar so much that she couldn’t take anymore. As a result, Hagar felt so distressed that she ran away to the desert. Whilst she was in the desert, God had seen what she was going through. He met her where she was a guided her back home.

This God is able to see people in every situation, from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows. Especially when we are at our lowest. God is still the same today as He was with Hagar. He never changes. I have felt this on a number of occasions. He can do the same for you too.

Something to think about…

Why not have a go at personalising Genesis 16:13 and re-write in your own words what you feel God is saying to you. You could also use my version and change to your own name.

Lynne, I have seen you. I see you in every situation you are in. You are not alone. I have plans to bless you because of what you have suffered.

I Am Cared For

Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
1 Peter 5:7

When a friend says to you, “I care about you”, how does it make you feel? Warm and fuzzy inside? Do you feel safe? Does it make you feel at ease with what they say?

Not me.

I yearn for others to show care towards me, but when it happens something inside me makes me feel on edge. I have mixed feelings and am very suspicious about what their intentions are. Underneath all of this, I am fearful about their motives in wanting to care for me.

“My mind hardens, my spirit stiffens and I respond with a cold toughness and distrust—of them. Of myself.”

This is what one friend told me. And she is right. Why? This sense of distrust is a direct result of the abuse suffered. My friend shares…

“As a little girl, I interpreted a babysitter’s niceness as care, and it turned out to be a selfish means to get their needs met—taking my innocence and trading it for betrayal.”

What my friend writes is exactly my experience too. Maybe you have experienced something similar. Or maybe you have had a friend you thought cared about you but has betrayed you instead.

We do have someone we can turn to though who wholeheartedly loves and cares for us. What Peter is saying in this verse is that we are a matter of God’s concern. We are not alone. We don’t have to bottle up all our worries. God alone is concerned about our well-being. He wants us to be complete.

God knows when we are sad and He feels our pain. He actually cares for us and He showed this by sending His One and only Son to set us free from all that holds us back. We shouldn’t worry about how much we can burden God. He can take everything we have – all our worries and concerns, and everything we have ever faced in this life.

31 Days Of Bible Affirmations – Day 5 – I Am Unique

I am Unique

I will offer You my grateful heart, for I am Your unique creation, filled with wonder and awe.
    You have approached even the smallest details with excellence;
    Your works are wonderful;
I carry this knowledge deep within my soul.
Psalm 139:14

In my previous post I wrote about how I felt I wasn’t good at anything when I were younger. A lot of how I felt about myself was due to the bullying I experienced throughout my school life. As a result of this, growing up I felt like the odd one out. I didn’t fit in.

Satan loves to use these negative feelings I have about myself in order for me to forget how wonderfully unique I am. After all, if I am beating myself up, I’m not working for God’s kingdom. Satan loves that and will exploit it whenever he can using whatever and whoever.

In order for me to overcome these thoughts and feelings, I need to stand strong on what God says about me. I need to believe what the Psalmist says: I am fearfully and wonderfully made. It’s not easy trying to change my thinking, but I am a work in progress.

Why not have a go at personalising Psalm 139:14 and re-write in your own words what you feel God is saying to you. You could also use my version and change to your own name.

Lynne, I want you to know deep within your heart that I created you so uniquely. You are wonderfully made. Even the parts you don’t feel good about. Let this truth sink deep inside you.

I Am Gifted
In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well.
Romans 12:6 (NLT)

Growing up, I didn’t feel like I was good at anything. I was always striving to achieve the best, but what I had was never recognised. Anything I did, didn’t seem to be good enough. I took part in plenty of activities, but I didn’t feel gifted in any of them.

I compared myself with other people a lot. Their standards were something I could never reach. What I didn’t realise was, I was playing this comparison game. And I was losing. As a result, this game I was playing didn’t help me to reach my full potential.

I needed to let go of this idea that everything had to be perfect. The expectations I have placed on myself, and what others expected too, has to be broken down. (I say has instead of had because I’m still working on this). God has given each of us a special gift. Furthermore, He longs to see us reach the potential we all have.

The good thing about God is the amount of grace He gives us. He doesn’t expect perfection. However, what He does expect is for us to reach our potential in the gifts He has gifted us.

Lynne, God has given you a gift that is unique to you. With the help of His grace, He wants you to use that gift to do what you are called to do well.

31 Days of Bible Affirmations – Day 2 – God’s Strength

31 Days of Bible Affirmations – Day 2 – God’s Strength

God’s Strength

The Lord is my strength and my shield;
My heart trusted in Him, and I am helped;
Therefore my heart greatly rejoices,
And with my song I will praise Him.
Psalm 28:7 (NKJV)

Last night’s sleep was pretty pants! (That means it wasn’t very good, to say the least). Most of my sleeps are not great due to the twins waking up through the night. However, last night was especially hard. I wasn’t feeling too great either, so today I am feeling a little fragile.

With everything I have been through over the last month, nights like last night are especially hard on my mental health. Thoughts of not being good enough plague me throughout the day as I struggle to find the strength to get through it.

With this in mind, and knowing I have committed to writing for the next few weeks about Bible affirmations, it only feels right to start with what I really need. God’s strength. This is not going to be an easy journey, as I need to be intentional in what I am doing. I need to push through the barriers that are in place to stop me from achieving what God wants me to hear. I need His strength in order for me to do this.

When David wrote Psalm 28, he was pleading with God for help to deliver him from the hands of his enemies. He was tired and weary and wanted no more. Yet, in the middle of his distress, his mind shifted. He took hold of his thoughts and remembered who God is. God wants us to take our thoughts captive too.

Why not have a go at personalising Psalm 28:7 and re-write in your own words what you feel God is saying to you. You could also use my version and change to your own name.

Lynne? Lean on me? I can be the strength you need when you feel you have nothing left.
Lynne? Take hold of me? I can be your shield and protect you from those thoughts you have.
Lynne? Trust me? Give me your heart and I will help you.
You will find that once you take hold of what I have to offer, your heart will be light again. You will once more be able to sing my praises.

This is a little cheesy and may make you cringe a little, but by the end I was smiling.
