My daughter came into the bedroom looking a little sad. The previous day she had received two bits of news which had upset her. Firstly, she didn’t get through in a competition she entered at school. Secondly, she found out one of her friends was leaving. She had known her since nursery.
We deal with failure and loss in different ways. Trying to help your little one come to terms with something beyond their control is hard. Her solution in that moment was to put her thumb in her mouth and she said this…
“My thumb is my happy place.”
This got me thinking. My daughters instinct was to find comfort and solace. She wanted to alleviate the pain she was feeling and be free from it. Her simple solution was so profound to me.
What do I do when I need to find comfort and solace?
Where do I go to find freedom from the pain of life?
What is my happy place?
All to often I find myself scrolling through media channels to find some form of recognition to make me feel happy. I look through Instagram, Facebook or Twitter and see how many likes my posts may have received. I then start to compare it to likes I may have received on a previous post.
Worse still, I start comparing it to likes other people have received for their posts. Why do they have more? Why have I received less likes today than yesterday?
Psalm 46 v1-3: God is a safe place to hide, ready to help when we need him. We stand fearless at the cliff-edge of doom, courageous in seastorm and earthquake, Before the rush and roar of oceans, the tremors that shift mountains. Jacob-wrestling God fights for us, God-of-Angel-Armies protects us.
Scrolling through media should not be my happy place. I know that. My happy place is resting in the One who will keep me safe.
What is your happy place?
This was written for the Five Minute Friday Community, where a number of writers gather for a weekly writing challenge around a single word prompt and write to our hearts content, but only for five minutes (or there abouts).
This weeks word prompt is ‘place’. Click here if you want to see what other people wrote. You can also have a go yourself. What do you think of when you hear the word ‘place ’?
Oh how I know the call of false comforts. To numb and deny the pain or to sit in it too. Thank God for His mercy, His ever hounding grace. He convicts me most through my girls too 😉. Thankful for our safe place with you. Thank you for being honest and open ❤
Definitely with you there on thanking God for His endless mercy and grace! We can keep going back to Him every time we stumble into the wrong arms of comfort.
There have been times when I had to search hard for my “happy” place. Then, I realize God is my happy place. He provides all I need. 🙂
He definitely does. It’s a good job He’s waiting for us, no matter how long it takes to realise Who makes us happy.
I resonate strongly with the last line, and wrote something on similar lines with that. : ) Visiting from FMF #71.
Thank you for visiting and it’s comforting to know this resonated with you.
