The habit of thumb sucking is seen as quite innocent up until a certain age. After this, it is then seen as a sign of insecurity. Children suck their thumb to give them comfort.
I can understand this. I was terribly insecure when I was growing up due to the abuse I experienced as a child and the bullying I received throughout high school. It wasn’t until I was in my (very) late teens that I stopped.
As we grow older, we look towards other forms of comfort to give us relief from the daily grind of life. Let’s face it, life is damn hard sometimes! We may find our comfort in food or alcohol. I know I like a good glass of wine and a bar of chocolate at the end of a challenging day.
I don’t need to look too far though to receive true comfort. And neither do you.
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. 2 Corinthians 1:3-5
Our God is the Father of compassion and the God of comfort. Sometimes we feel that He may not be near us, but He does provide comfort in ways we may not realise.
Only just recently I felt alone and abandoned by people around us. I cried out to God to hear our prayers and for Him to provide us with some sort of comfort. In His own faithful way He provided, but it was through friends at our church. Even people we didn’t know were reassuring us they were praying for us.
Paul reminds us in Corinthians that God comforts us in ALL our troubles. When we are going through hard times, we have the assurance that God is able to provide us with comfort. We just need to keep our eyes and heart open to what is around us.
